Hyperlite’s lightweight packs are a fixture on trails long and short. While the Biddeford, Maine-based company makes a model for seemingly every outdoor activity—it sells 20 at last count—the 2-pound Southwest is a literally and metaphorically solid choice for anyone heading on a thru-hike or other lengthy journey. Users don’t need to baby this 55-liter hauler’s Dyneema body, which is tough enough to stand up to scrapes with rocks, stray branches, and more. Two removable aluminum stays (pulling them saves about 4 ounces) efficiently transfer loads to the hipbelt, while a generous external stash pocket and hipbelt pouches store both raingear and small essentials for quick access. A roll-top closure and taped seams largely obviate the need for a pack cover for even rainy hikes.
