Levi’s Just Breathed New Life Into a 90-Year-Old Outerwear Icon

Levi’s is known for many things — including category-defining denim and a seemingly endless rotation of trucker jackets that have formed the backbone of American workwear for decades.

But today, the San Francisco-based brand also regularly releases pieces outside the traditional wheelhouse while still feeling firmly rooted in its denim heritage.

The new Highland Park Jacket is one such item — a modern, slightly oversized riff on the iconic Harrington jacket that feels just right for today’s looser silhouettes and transitional weather.

The SF-based denim juggernaut has made plenty of Harrington jacket homages before, but the new Highland Park might be one of its best modernized takes on the classic jacket yet.

The Harrington jacket’s origins date back to the late 1930s England, where it was initially designed as functional outerwear for golfers. Lightweight, water-resistant, and cut short for ease of movement, the jacket quickly found popularity beyond the fairway.

Its simple yet versatile design — stand collar, zip front, elastic cuffs — made it a favorite among working-class Brits and, later, American cultural icons.

Everyone from real-life style icons like Steve McQueen and Elvis Presley (and Ronald Reagan?) to fictional influencers from James Bond and Clark Kent donned the Harrington, cementing its place in menswear history.

The Baracuta G9 is often considered the benchmark by which other Harringtons are measured. In its original form, signature details like a Fraser tartan lining and umbrella back yoke give it a distinctively preppy vibe that’s often left behind in many modern reincarnations.
