If you’re a Timex fan or follow watch media, you’ve probably seen the gloriously ’90s sailing watch floating around since April.

The 1995 Intrepid reissue was a passion project of watch writer Brynn Wallner, better known by her personal brand Dimepiece, and Alan Bedwell of Foundwell.

As Wallner recounts on her Substack, she stumbled across a photo of John F. Kennedy Jr. wearing a big, sporty watch in the Getty Images archives. The juxtaposition of the ultra-casual watch and the handsome Kennedy scion’s suit and tie caught her eye.

Wallner sent the image to her friend and vintage watch flipping business partner, Bedwell, to identify. He recognized it as a Timex and suggested that they should attempt to have it reproduced.

Through connections at long-time Timex collaborator Todd Snyder, Wallner and Bedwell met with members of the Timex design team and sold them on creating a faithful reproduction of the exact watch on JFK Jr.’s wrist.

Foundwell and Timex released the 1995 Intrepid in April, with the latter’s allotment of the limited edition run quickly selling out. Todd Snyder unexpectedly released a small reserve in June, which disappeared within a week, supercharging the hype around the $199 watch.
