Would you sacrifice your own safety to save a friend from a bear? In October of 1994, Ann Quarterman and Christine Bialkowski set out for a hike in Canada’s Glacier National Park. They were experienced outdoorswomen, and having grown up in rural British Columbia were no strangers to bears. But an unusual grizzly encounter would change their lives forever—and leave a lasting impact on how we think about bear safety and preparation.

For Bear Month, our friends at Tooth and Claw Podcast dove into the story of the mauling that took place on that October day, and the extreme courage and selflessness that allowed Quarterman and Bialkowski to both make it out alive. Listen to biologist Wes Larson, along with co-hosts Jeff Larson and Mike Smith, weave the tale—and offer insight on how all hikers can be more prepared to face a dangerous encounter with a wild bear.

We’re celebrating Bear Month until June 15. Read our best survival stories, safety tips, and practical advice about our ursine neighbors here.
